Nyerere National Park, carved out of the northern Selous Game Reserve in 2019, is the largest national park in Africa at over 30,000 km². A scheduled light aircraft from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam reaches the Mtemere airstrip in under an hour, which makes a day trip genuinely possible.
You land mid-morning, meet your guide and spend the middle of the day on a game drive through the miombo woodland and along the Rufiji — the reserve holds large populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and lion, and one of the last strongholds of the African wild dog. A late-afternoon flight brings you back.
Early scheduled flight to the Mtemere airstrip. Half-day game drive with a picnic lunch through the Selous — river, woodland and floodplain. Transfer back to the airstrip for the afternoon flight.
