3-Day Nyerere (Selous) Drive-in Safari

3 days Private safari, 2–7 guests per 4x4; road from Dar es Salaam from $755 per person

Nyerere National Park (the northern Selous) is about five to six hours by road south of Dar es Salaam — far enough to feel remote, close enough for a three-day trip without flying. The park is built around the Rufiji River and its chain of lakes, which support dense concentrations of hippo, crocodile, elephant and buffalo, and it is one of the best places in Tanzania to see African wild dog.

Three days here gives you the three ways to experience the reserve: a boat safari on the river at sunset, a full day of game drives, and an early-morning walking safari on foot with an armed ranger.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Dar es Salaam to Nyerere

Morning pick-up in Dar es Salaam and the drive south to the park (5–6 hours), arriving for lunch. In the late afternoon, a sunset boat safari on the Rufiji River for hippo, crocodile and birds. Overnight in or near the park.

2
Full day in the Selous

A full day of game drives through the woodland and along the lakes, with a picnic lunch. Overnight in or near the park.

3
Walking safari and return

An early-morning walking safari on foot with an armed ranger, then breakfast, and the drive back to Dar es Salaam for a hotel or airport drop-off.
