The Shape of the Trip
Instead of driving between parks, you take small scheduled planes between bush airstrips. A camp vehicle meets you on landing and you are on a game drive within minutes. You trade long transfer days for more time watching wildlife, and reach parks that are impractical by road.
Shorter trips where road days would eat the itinerary, the remote southern (Nyerere, Ruaha) and western (Katavi, Mahale) parks, and travellers who would rather fly for an hour than drive for six.
Usually the fly-in camps inside or bordering each park — small, often all-inclusive of drives, meals, drinks and park fees, with open vehicles and walking guides. You can mix tiers between camps.
Light aircraft limit you to around 15 kg in a soft bag plus a small camera bag — you can leave a case at your first hotel and collect it at the end. Schedules can shift with the weather. It costs more than a road trip, but the difference in a one-week itinerary is significant.
