Confirm the current requirements for your passport with the official Tanzania immigration service at visa.immigration.go.tz or your nearest Tanzanian embassy or high commission.
Most visitors do. Citizens of most African countries and a small number of others are exempt for tourism — check the official list. Everyone else needs either an eVisa obtained before travel or, for many nationalities, a visa on arrival.
Apply on the official portal at least two to three weeks before departure, upload a passport photo and your flight details, and travel with the printed approval. Some nationalities (“referral” cases) must use the eVisa and cannot get a visa on arrival.
Available to many nationalities at Kilimanjaro (JRO) and Julius Nyerere (DAR) international airports, at Zanzibar, and at the main land borders. Bring the exact fee in clean US dollar bills and expect queues.
The ordinary tourist visa is single-entry and allows a stay of up to 90 days; the fee for most nationalities is US$50. US citizens are issued a multiple-entry visa at US$100. Fees are paid in US dollars.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry, with at least two blank pages.
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania and uses the same visa, but there is a separate immigration check on arrival and a mandatory travel-insurance requirement — see the Travel Insurance page.
