Machame approaches Kilimanjaro from the south-west and is prized for its scenery — rainforest, the Shira Plateau, the Lava Tower, the Barranco Wall and the southern glaciers. The seven-day version adds an acclimatisation day compared with the six-day, and follows the "climb high, sleep low" profile on day 3, which materially improves the chance of reaching the summit.
All climbs include a qualified mountain guide, an assistant guide on larger groups, a cook, porters, park fees, camping equipment and pre- and post-climb accommodation in Moshi or Arusha. Machame is a trek, not a technical climb — no ropes or mountaineering skills are needed, but it is demanding and the altitude is serious.
Register at the gate and trek 5–7 hours through montane rainforest to the first camp.
A shorter, steeper day (4–6 hours) climbing out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau, with first clear views of Kibo.
Climb to the Lava Tower for lunch, then descend to Barranco — a long day (6–8 hours) that aids acclimatisation by taking you high and sleeping you low.
Scramble up the Barranco Wall at dawn, then a series of ridges and valleys to Karanga (4–5 hours).
A short climb (3–4 hours) to the summit base camp. Rest, eat and sleep early ahead of the midnight start.
Depart around midnight, reaching Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak near sunrise. Descend to Barafu, rest, then continue to Mweka Camp — 12–16 hours of walking in total.
Final 3–4 hour descent through the rainforest. Collect summit certificates at the gate and transfer back to your hotel.
