Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar City and has changed little in two hundred years — a maze of narrow lanes between tall coral-rag buildings, ornate Arab and Indian carved doors, bustling bazaars, mosques, a Hindu temple and a Anglican cathedral built on the site of the old slave market. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as an outstanding example of a Swahili coastal trading town.
A walking tour takes in the market, the former slave-trade sites, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders and the seafront, usually finishing at the Forodhani night market for grilled seafood. Most visitors spend a night or two here before moving to a beach, and a Stone Town stay pairs naturally with a spice-farm tour just outside town.
