Magoroto Forest Retreat — 3 Days

3 days Forest lodge near Muheza, Tanga Region from $215 per person

Magoroto Forest Estate sits at about 850 m in the East Usambara foothills near Muheza, in the Tanga Region. It is a working estate — spices, fruit and timber — wrapped in tropical rainforest, with a lake, simple cabins and a restaurant, and views on a clear day down the valley to the Indian Ocean.

The pace is deliberately slow: forest walks and birding (the East Usambaras are one of the richest bird areas in East Africa), swimming and canoeing on the lake, and time to do very little. It works as a stop between Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar and the northern safari circuit, or as a standalone break.

Itinerario Giorno per Giorno

1
Arrival at Magoroto

Drive to Magoroto (about 5–6 hours from Dar es Salaam, or a shorter transfer from Tanga). Settle in, then an afternoon walk in the forest around the estate. Dinner and overnight in a cabin.

2
A day in the forest

A full day at the estate — a longer guided forest walk with birding, time on the lake by canoe or swimming, and a look round the spice and fruit gardens. Dinner and overnight.

3
Departure

A final morning walk, then the drive on — back to Dar es Salaam, or north towards the safari parks.
