Marangu Hotel

A historic, family-run country hotel in gardens on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes — one of the oldest climbing bases on the mountain, used for pre- and post-trek nights.

Hotel ★★★☆☆ Mid-range Marangu village, Kilimanjaro foothills Kilimanjaro National Park

The Marangu Hotel has been run by the same family for generations and is a traditional base for climbs via the Marangu Route, whose gate is close by. It's a low-key country hotel — old stone cottages in large flowering gardens, a bar with a century of mountaineering history on the walls — rather than anything modern or slick.

Most guests stay a night before and after a Kilimanjaro trek; the hotel also runs its own full-service climbs.
