Walking Safari

Exploring the bush on foot with an armed ranger and a walking guide — tracks, plants, insects and the small details you miss from a vehicle.

A walking safari changes the scale of everything. Instead of covering ground, you slow right down: following tracks, identifying birdcalls, looking at what's been eating a particular plant, understanding how the ecosystem fits together. It's led by a specially licensed walking guide and accompanied by an armed park ranger, and the aim is knowledge and atmosphere rather than ticking off big animals.

Walking is allowed in Nyerere, Ruaha, parts of the Serengeti (private concessions), Arusha National Park and around Lake Manyara, among others — not on the open plains where you'd disturb game. Most walks are two to three hours in the cool of the morning.

Highlights

  • Licensed walking guide plus an armed ranger
  • Tracking, plants, birds — the details vehicles miss
  • Best in Nyerere, Ruaha, Arusha NP and private concessions
  • Morning walks of 2–3 hours
