Tanzania has over 1,100 recorded bird species — from the flamingos of the Rift Valley lakes to forest endemics and the shoebill of the western swamps.

Tanzania is one of the top birding countries in Africa, with more than 1,100 species recorded and around 30 found nowhere else. The variety of habitat is the reason: soda lakes crowded with flamingos and waders, acacia savanna full of rollers, bee-eaters and hornbills, the groundwater forest of Lake Manyara, the Eastern Arc forests of the Udzungwas, and the swamps of the west where shoebill and wattled crane hang on.

Any safari delivers plenty of birds, but a dedicated birding trip — with a specialist guide, the right season (November to April for migrants and breeding plumage) and time in a range of habitats — can push a trip list well past 400 species.
