Katavi receives only a few hundred visitors a year and is reached by charter flight, which is exactly why it feels like a step back to how safari used to be. In the dry season (June–October) the Katuma River and the Chada and Katavi floodplains shrink to a few pools, and the wildlife that gathers is extraordinary: buffalo herds in the hundreds or thousands, hippo pods so crowded that bulls fight for space, big lion prides on the buffalo, and crocodiles aestivating in the riverbanks.
Game drives are the core of a stay, but Katavi's camps also offer walking safaris and fly-camping, which is the best way to feel how empty this place is. Three nights is enough for a proper look.
Charter or scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam or Ruaha. Transfer to camp and an afternoon game drive on the floodplain.
A full day following the Katuma River and its floodplains — buffalo, hippo, lion and elephant — with a picnic lunch.
A morning walking safari with an armed ranger, and the option of a night fly-camping out in the bush.
A final morning drive, then the flight out — often continuing to Mahale for chimpanzee trekking.
