Mbudya and Bongoyo are small uninhabited islands in the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve, a few kilometres off the city. Bongoyo is about 20 minutes by boat from The Slipway; Mbudya is a longer ride from the Slipway or a quick hop from the White Sands Hotel jetty on Bagamoyo Road.
Both have white-sand beaches, shaded bandas to rent, calm water for swimming and coral close enough to snorkel from the shore. Fish and seafood are grilled on the beach through the day. It is the easiest escape from the city — go for the day and be back by late afternoon.
Boat transfer from The Slipway or White Sands, then the day on the beach — swimming, snorkelling over the reef, a shaded banda, and grilled seafood for lunch. Return boat in the afternoon.
