梅鲁山脚下一座紧凑而风景如画的公园——疣猴、长颈鹿、火烈鸟环绕的火山口湖泊,是坦桑尼亚少数几个可以划独木舟并在野生动物间徒步的地方之一。
阿鲁沙国家公园成立于1960年,面积仅137平方公里,距离市区及乞力马扎罗国际机场仅约半小时车程,是较长行程中理想的首站或末站。尽管面积不大,公园却拥有令人惊叹的多样景观。
莫梅拉湖群是一系列浅水碱性湖泊,吸引着火烈鸟栖息,也是坦桑尼亚少数几个游客可以划独木舟的地方,划桨时甚至能望见水牛与河马。恩古尔多托火山口边缘的山地森林栖息着成群的黑白疣猴,而开阔的草原则是长颈鹿、斑马和疣猪的家园。公园同时也是攀登梅鲁山(海拔4,566米,坦桑尼亚第二高峰)为期三至四天旅程的起点,是攀登乞力马扎罗山前绝佳的适应性登山之旅。在晴朗的清晨,从公园的观景点可同时望见梅鲁山与乞力马扎罗山。
