恩戈罗恩戈罗并非国家公园——它是由恩戈罗恩戈罗保护区管理局(NCAA)管理的多功能保护区,野生动物、旅游业与马赛游牧生活在这片8,292平方公里的土地上共存。该保护区设立于1959年,并于1979年被列为联合国教科文组织世界遗产,更于2010年获得了罕见的自然与文化双重遗产地位。
其核心是恩戈罗恩戈罗火山口:一个深约600米、底部面积达260平方公里的塌陷破火山口,形成于二三百万年前。约25,000只大型动物栖息其中,是东非观赏黑犀牛的最佳地点之一,此外还有密集的狮群、象群、水牛、河马,以及苏打湖上的火烈鸟。更广阔的保护区内还包括奥杜瓦伊峡谷,这是世界上最重要的早期人类化石遗址之一,曾在此发现能人(Homo habilis)的遗骸。前往火山口通常会与塞伦盖蒂及塔兰吉雷一同纳入北部环线行程。
