塞伦盖蒂于1951年正式设立,并于1981年被列为联合国教科文组织世界遗产,占地14,763平方公里,横跨坦桑尼亚北部,从恩戈罗恩戈罗高地一直延伸至肯尼亚边境,与马赛马拉相连。其名称源自马赛语"siringet",意为"永无止境延伸的土地",而南部的短草平原恰恰印证了这一点。
公园最为人熟知的是动物大迁徙:超过150万只牛羚及约25万只斑马沿着约800公里的年度环形路线迁徙,于12月至3月间在南部平原产崽,并于6月至10月间接受格鲁米提河与马拉河渡河的考验。塞伦盖蒂还拥有非洲最大的狮群种群之一——超过3,000只,此外还有豹子、猎豹、斑鬣狗,以及数量可观的象群与水牛。全年均可乘车观赏野生动物,而在平原上空的热气球游猎则是标志性的特色体验。
