A 247 km² park in the Kagera Region, gazetted in 2019 from an old game reserve — wetlands, hills and woodland with sitatunga, roan antelope and a strong birdlife, and almost no tourism yet.
Rumanyika-Karagwe was declared a national park in 2019, based on the former Rumanyika-Orugundu Game Reserve in Karagwe and Kyerwa Districts, Kagera Region. It covers about 247 square kilometres of hills, woodland and extensive wetlands in the far north-west.
The wetlands are the draw: sitatunga antelope, hippo and a rich water-bird community, with roan antelope, bushbuck, buffalo and elephant in the drier woodland. Like its neighbours Ibanda-Kyerwa and Burigi-Chato, it has almost no visitor facilities and is only realistically reached by road from Bukoba. It is included here for completeness — it is a place to watch as Tanzania develops its north-western parks, rather than a current safari destination.
