About 3,865 km² of miombo woodland and seasonal floodplain in western Tanzania, gazetted in 2019 — Tanzania's largest sable and roan herds, huge crocodiles and shoebill storks in the swamps.
Ugalla River National Park was created in 2019 from the long-established Ugalla River Game Reserve, and covers roughly 3,865 square kilometres in the Tabora and Katavi regions of western Tanzania. The Ugalla River loops through it, flooding a wide plain in the wet season and shrinking to pools and channels in the dry.
The park is known for holding some of the largest herds of sable and roan antelope in Tanzania, alongside elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe and zebra in the miombo woodland. The swampy river margins support sitatunga, Cape clawless otter, pygmy geese and the localised shoebill and wattled crane, and the river itself is reputed to hold some of the biggest crocodiles ever recorded in Africa. It is remote, undeveloped and usually reached in combination with Katavi.
