A simple, community-linked lodge set back in the forest a few kilometres from the rim — no crater view, but noticeably better value and buffalo often on the lawn.
Rhino Lodge is a straightforward timber lodge in the montane forest of the conservation area, associated with the local Maasai community which benefits from the revenue. It doesn't have the crater view the rim lodges charge for, but it's warm, comfortable and a good deal cheaper, and its forest setting means buffalo, bushbuck and elephant regularly wander past the rooms.
A sensible choice for travellers who'd rather put the budget into an extra day on safari than into a view they'll see for one morning.
