The Great Migration

Timing your safari around the movement of 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra through the Serengeti — calving, rutting and the river crossings.

The Great Migration is a continuous, year-round loop rather than a single event, so "seeing the migration" is really about being in the right part of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem at the right time. Roughly: December to March the herds are calving on the southern short-grass plains near Ndutu, with intense predator activity; April to June they move north-west through the Western Corridor and the Grumeti River; July to October they're in the far north, crossing the Mara River in the dramatic scenes most people picture; November they drift back south.

We plan migration trips around your travel dates — advising which region to base in, whether a mobile camp that relocates with the herds makes sense, and how many days you'll need to have a realistic chance of a crossing.

Highlights

  • River crossings in the north (roughly Jul–Oct)
  • Calving season and predator action (Dec–Mar)
  • Mobile camps that move with the herds
  • Itineraries planned around your exact dates
